Description

This tester determines the actual surface area of sand samples in square centimeters per gram of sand. The relative angularity of the sand sample can also be quantitatively expressed by the Coefficient of Angularity. This is the ratio of the measured specific surface area, as calculated from a sieve analysis, assuming that all the grains are spherical. Since the grains are not usually perfect spheres, the Coefficient of Angularity will be higher than unity.

In operation, 50 grams of sand, washed free of clay, are placed in the center burette, rapped lightly to consolidate, and the volume of sand is noted. A fixed volume of air is passed through the sample from the U-tube and the time required is measured with a stopwatch.

Using the observed sand volume and time, the specific surface area is read directly from the graph supplied with the instrument. The theoretical specific surface can then be calculated from a sieve analysis, on the same 50 gram sample, using special multipliers provided in the furnished instructions.
